Liverpool dealt new Roberto Firmino injury blow but Diogo Jota hopes increase

Jurgen Klopp has given hope Diogo Jota could be back for the Carabao Cup final – but admits Liverpool are facing another spell without Roberto Firmino.

Both forwards were absent from a much-changed Reds side for Saturday’s 3-1 Premier League home win over Norwich City.

Jota injured his ankle during the first half of the midweek Champions League triumph at Inter Milan, while Firmino – his replacement at half-time – reported a muscle issue after the game.

While Jota’s damage is not as bad as first feared, Liverpool are still sweating on the availability of the Portuguese for next Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley.

And Firmino, who has already had been sidelined twice this season with hamstring problems, is facing a race against time to be fit having already been ruled out of Wednesday’s visit of Leeds United.

“We made a lot of changes (against Norwich) but two we had to make in Diogo and Bobby,” said Klopp. “Both were not available.

“We really don’t know 100% (when they will be back).

“With Diogo, it looks a little bit better than we first thought. With Bobby we didn’t even know he had something until he felt it after the game.

“We all thought it was a little thing but it’s a muscle injury and we have to see how long it will take, I don’t know at the moment.

“But for sure not the next game. We have to see.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold was another notable absentee on Saturday, but Klopp added: “Trent was just rested today. Pretty much the rest was in the squad.”
