Jurgen Klopp facing Mohamed Salah decision as Liverpool consider midfielder shake-up

Liverpool will look to keep pace with Manchester City as they resume their Premier League title challenge this week.

The Reds returned to action after the mid-winter break with a solid 3-1 success over Championship side Cardiff City in their FA Cup fourth round tie at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool now turn their attentions to the top flight when they entertain Leicester City on Thursday.

And here we look ahead to the changes Jurgen Klopp could make when his team are next in action.

Matip to return?

With so many games to come between now and the March international break, Klopp will rely heavily on rotation.

That includes between the sticks, with Alisson Becker poised to depose Caoimhin Kelleher, who featured against Cardiff.

Andy Robertson came off the bench to assist a goal for Harvey Elliott at the weekend, and will likely replace Kostas Tsimikas at left-back, despite another solid showing from the Greek.

The main decision will come at centre-back. Virgil van Dijk was partnered by Ibrahima Konate on Sunday, but Joel Matip is challenging for a recall having been on the bench and Joe Gomez is back available after a period of isolation following a positive coronavirus test.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is favourite to continue at right-back with Conor Bradley and Gomez alternatives.

Central reservations

The returns of Harvey Elliott and Thiago Alcantara, along with the availability of Naby Keita after the Africa Cup of Nations, have given Klopp significant options in midfield.

Fabinho was rested at the weekend while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, like Gomez, wasn't ready to be considered after a bout of COVID.

Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones and Keita started against Cardiff, although all three were substituted by the end. James Milner could provide experience.

Tyler Morton is another option although the teenager may find his first-team chances limited during the remainder of the season.

Mane and Salah decision

Klopp's chief call is what to do with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Mane will return on a high having fired Senegal to AFCON glory in the final against Salah's Egypt on Sunday.

The latter, though, played four 120-minute matches in 12 days - three ending in penalty shoot-outs - and will no doubt be feeling the physical, mental and emotional effects of such an arduous tournament.

Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino started against Cardiff, while new signing Luis Diaz will be pressing for a first start having come off the bench at the weekend.

Divock Origi is likely to be available after two months out, while Oxlade-Chamberlain - who filled in for Salah on the right in the last two Premier League games - is another possibility.

Kaide Gordon, similar to Morton, could spend more time playing for the under-23s in the coming months.
