Jurgen Klopp drops Lautaro Martinez compliment with Liverpool 'ready to attack' striker

Jurgen Klopp heaped praise on Lautaro Martinez on Tuesday night - just weeks after reports claimed that Liverpool were 'ready to attack' a deal for the Inter Milan star.

The Red's first leg advantage was enough to edge them into the Champions League final, despite falling to a 1-0 defeat against Inter.

It was Martinez who stole the show on Merseyside - even if his stunning, match-winning strike was nothing more than a scant consolation in the end.

CalcioMercato reported last month that Liverpool were ready to firm up their interest in the prolific striker in the summer, with Inter open to 'sacrificing' their talisman.

And Klopp's subtle praise for the Argentine star could be a hint that the Reds have reignited their interest in the 24-year-old.

“So, the first 20 minutes I didn’t like our counter-press too much and that is something that is nothing to do with the opponent, that is only about us," Klopp said.

“The goal we conceded, we shouldn’t have conceded, even when the finish was really brilliant, but we could have done [things] different before.

“Things like this can happen, so again, you have to make sure you know about it and then you don’t do it again – or you just do it better next time.”

Following the £37million arrival of Luis Diaz last month, Liverpool arguably boast the most potent and star-studded attacking unit in Europe right now - so it remains to be seen if they are still hunting for more attacking talent.

But it's worth nothing that there are some long-term concerns at Anfield.

Liverpool's old guard, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are all inside the final 18 months of their contracts.

And to date, little progress has been made on new deals for any of the Reds 'untouchable' trio.

Liverpool have also been evidently planning for the future with some of their transfer business, with Martinez fitting the profile of the Reds recent attacking recruits..

Taking that into account, it's not out of the question that Liverpool could reignite their interest in Martinez; particularly if Klopp was impressed with what he saw on Tuesday night.

Martinez has been persistently linked with a move to the Premier League over the past 12 months.

There were a host of reports claiming that the Inter hotshot was on his way to Arsenal last summer.

But Martinez eventually stayed put, with Inter instead opting to cash in on Romelu Lukaku, who returned to Chelsea.

The prolific hitman has since gone on to plunder 14 league goals in 25 games after playing a pivotal role in the Inter side that surged to the Scudetto last year.
