Jurgen Klopp confirms Liverpool transfer stance on Fulham wonderkid Fabio Carvalho

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Liverpool are "still interested" in Fabio Carvalho.

The winger, 18, has been in superb form this season, scoring seven goals in 18 Championship appearances to help Fulham go five points clear at the top of the table.

Liverpool tried to sign Carvalho in January but Fulham manager Marco Silva refused, not wanting to hamper his team's bid to win promotion to the Premier League.

The teenager is out of contract at the end of the season, though, giving Klopp the chance to sign him on a free transfer in the summer.

Liverpool would be obliged to pay Fulham a compensation fee for nurturing Carvalho's talent, but that would only be a relatively small amount of cash.

"I don't know, we will see," said Klopp when asked if Liverpool would make another bid for Carvalho. "We are obviously still interested, it would be crazy if we are not.

"It's obviously not in our hands. It was late before the deadline and it didn't work out. We will see what happens."

On Liverpool's transfer strategy, Klopp added: "Our strategy is to sign the right players at the right moment.

"We recognise issues in terms of positions or contracts. We will never miss having a look ahead, that's what we are doing."

Born in Portugal, Carvalho has represented England at U16, U17 and U18 levels and was named the EFL's Young Player of the Month last August.

"Fabio will be with us until the end of the season," Silva reassured Fulham fans ahead of transfer deadline day. "I would like to see him here for more years.

"From day one I have been trying to keep him. It is not a surprise that clubs are interested in Fabio. We are talking about a young player with big talent.

"The situation is not easy because he is in the last year of his contract, but that is the reality. It is out of our plans for him to leave the club in this window.

"It has been difficult for us to renew with him, but we are trying.

"It is always difficult with a player of this talent - even with a contract it is difficult to keep him, and without it is even worse."

Carvalho does not currently have an agent after leaving Unique Sports Management in January and is unlikely to sign a new contract until a new intermediary is appointed.

Cristiano Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes is thought to be keen on taking the talent under his wing and has "promised him the world".

"He definitely has to keep his feet on the floor, and the people around him," said Silva at the beginning of January.

"Because it is important to understand that sometimes you want to make a step bigger than your leg can take and sometimes you’re making a big mistake.

"I’m not saying that it will be with Fulham... but sometimes you have to understand that a football career is not just in one moment - you have to prepare the future as well.

"Fabio has natural talent, and when you have natural talent, that is the first big step to have a big career and to get to the top."
