Jurgen Klopp admits he 'didn't want' final whistle reaction to Liverpool's win over Tottenham

Jurgen Klopp says he did not initially intend to perform his trademark victory salute to the supporters after Liverpool recorded their first away win of the season with a 2-1 triumph at Tottenham on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah scored twice in the first half before the Reds held firm against Spurs pressure for the final 20 minutes after Harry Kane had reduced the deficit and the post-match scenes saw Klopp punch the air in celebration in front of a jubilant Liverpool end.

It's the first time this season Klopp has performed his now famous routine, but the German insists he only did so after getting "carried away" with what could yet be a major win in the race for the top four.

“It was not my plan actually, I did not want to do it," said Klopp. "I got carried away, but I thought the people deserved a little bit. They have been tough times, we have had to travel a lot in the Premier League until they saw the first three points. It was big, absolutely big.

“I was really knackered; it was a really tough game for everybody. Brilliant first half, really, really good first half, good football, controlled, top goals, world-class goals and then we all know Tottenham is coming back, take a lot of risk, they became pretty direct, switched the sides, crossed the ball early and that makes life really difficult because you cannot defend all these situations. There were a lot of fights for the second ball."

The Reds boss added: “We had our counter-attacking moments, were not precise enough in these moments, it would have been massive (to score) and if you can score a third it changes the whole game but we couldn’t. Then Tottenham scored their goal which was really well played, and we had to keep fighting. We did that, I like that.

"People who have followed us a bit longer know that even in our best spells, if you want to win an away game this is a completely normal way to do it. I’m really happy about it tonight."
