Junior title success for Perth swimmers at Scottish National and Open Championships

Perth City Swim Club made a splash at the Scottish National and Open Championships.

Katherine Renfrew and Evan Davidson both returned to the region with junior titles following a busy weekend of competition at Tollcross in Glasgow.

Katherine was crowned 100 freestyle junior champion and 100 fly junior champion.

Swim coach Ann Dickson said: “We experimented a little bit at the weekend.

“Katherine doesn’t really swim fly, but ended up winning at the Scottish National Age Group Championships [earlier this year]. We had never trained in it.

“I decided to try something out and we did a three-week block, changing from her main strokes to work fly as main-set. It is really hard work and tiring.

“We knew it might affect us at the Scottish Open, but it worked out for us.”

Ann added: “Katherine now has the British Summer Championships coming up.

“It’s all just about trying to swim her very best, make some finals and see what happens.”

Evan, who represents Perth City Swim Club and also trains with Elaine Johnston at Strathallan School, became junior champion in the 200IM, 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke.

It sets the local youngster up nicely for a busy - and exciting - summer schedule.

“Evan knows exactly where he wants to go,” Ann explained to the PA. "He wants to go all the way with his swimming.

“It will take time to work through but Elaine has been doing a good job with him at Strathallan. He gives a lot and is great to work with.

“Evan has a very exciting time ahead with the European Youth Olympics and then the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.

“He will be really up for it by the time he heads for Slovenia, where he should do well.

“The Scotland team going out to Trinidad and Tobago is a strong one and it is always a very special event to compete in.”
