The Junior and Mini Great North Run will take place on Saturday, October 8 at the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside after being rearranged following the death of the Queen in September.
The highest-ever number of young runners are expected to take part in this year’s event and entries have all been rolled over to the new date Saturday, October 8.
Families who can't make the October date can request to have places moved to next year’s event, taking place on Saturday 9 September 2023. The rollover request form is on the Great North Run website.

The event will go ahead as previously planned and supporters are still welcomed to the event to cheer on the runners as they complete the course. The Mini Great North Run is a 1.2km route open to children aged three to eight.
The Junior Great North Run, open to those aged between nine and 16, is a 4km course. There will also be The Mini 50, a 50m short course for children with specific needs.
Before the race participants will be able to warm up with music and help from the official mascot Tyney the Tortoise who will be meeting and greeting in the Event Village.

The family friendly event sees races spread out throughout the day, with boys and girls split into age groups for the Junior Great North Run. Information may be subject to change, please check the Great North Run’s website .

There are seven waves for the Mini Great North Run. There is also a dedicated wheelchair start time for those doing the Mini 1.2km route. The event village closes at 6:15pm.

Where to park for the Junior and Mini Great North Run?
Participants are encouraged to attend the run using public transport due to the number of road closures in place for the event. With the race starting and finishing on the Newcastle side of the river, those who need to park should check Newcastle council’s website for more information on the limited parking available.
How to get to the Junior and Mini Great North Run?
The start of the race, on the Newcastle side of the river near the Swing Bridge, is a ten-minute walk from Central Station and Gateshead Metro Station. The Great North Run’s website states that “up to three children under the age of 11 can travel for free on Metro and Shields Ferry services when accompanied by a fare paying adult”, visit nexus.org for more information.
