A huge mural in east London dedicated to the late actress June Brown has been praised by fans as an “amazing tribute”.

The EastEnders actress, who played Dot Cotton on the BBC soap, died at the age of 95 at her home in Surrey on Sunday.

Following the news of her death, a large mural now depicts the star has been painted at Rise Park in Romford.

The beautiful tribute, created by muralist Gnasher, is titled For June.

It features the soap star on a white background, dressed in a floral shirt and sporting her classic up-do.

Alongside the finished work on his social media page, Gnasher has received widespread praise for the memorial.

“What an amazing tribute to a wonderful actress RIP June,” wrote one fan, among a sea of comments.

Another wrote: “what a talent you have and what an amazing tribute to an absolute legend!!! RIP.”

The colourful artwork was revealed just days after Brown’s family confirmed the actress had died.

The statement was released by Brown’s family at the time read: “We are deeply saddened to announce our beloved mother, June, passed away very peacefully at her home in Surrey on Sunday evening, with her family by her side.

“We would kindly ask that our privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

Brown was a staple figure on BBC’s EastEnders for over three decades before she stepped away from her role in 2020.

Arriving in 1985, her character Dot Cotton was involved in some very memorable storylines throughout her time on the soap.

These included helping her best friend Ethel take her own life, going to prison for the death of Nasty Nick and one episode called Pretty Baby in which she delivers a monologue that earned her a BAFTA nomination.

Within the last few days, tributes have flooded in from the showbiz world as her co-stars and her friends reflected on Brown’s iconic television career.

A representative for EastEnders said: “We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved June Brown, OBE, MBE, sadly passed away last night.

“There are not enough words to describe how much June was loved and adored by everyone at EastEnders, her loving warmth, wit and great humour will never be forgotten.

“June created one of the most iconic characters in Dot Cotton, not just in soap but in British television, and having appeared in 2,884 episodes, June’s remarkable performances created some of EastEnders’ finest moments.

“We send all our love and deepest sympathies to June’s family and friends. A very bright light has gone out at EastEnders today but we shall all be raising a sweet sherry in June’s memory. Rest in peace, our dearest June. You will never be forgotten.”
