Julie Hesmondhalgh shares what she did with Hayley Cropper's iconic red anorak

Coronation Street Hayley Cropper's iconic red coat is now on display at a museum.

Julie Hesmondhalgh played Hayley for more than 16 years and quickly became synonymous with the show. One of the kinder characters on the cobbles, she was a fan favourite amongst viewers but still found herself wrapped up in some of the show's darker storylines.

Hayley broke boundaries with her transgender coming out storyline that sought to humanise the community. On the flip side of her emotional roles, she was also locked away for failing to meet bail following a troublesome foster case.

Throughout her ever-changing parts and stories on the show, one thing about Hayley remained the same - her iconic red anorak. Hayley was rarely caught without it and even after her death in 2014, the coat went on to cause emotional distress for her partner, Roy Cropper, as he broke down finding it amongst her belongings.

Joining Lorraine to reflect on the role, Julie revealed what happened to the anorak once she left the show. She said: "When I left Corrie I didn't really know what to do with the anorak because I knew it was this iconic item.

"I held on to it for ages and I was trying to raise money by auctioning it off and in the end, the People's History Museum in Manchester asked me for it to be a part of their permanent queer exhibition there so it was in a glass case at the People's History museum.

"But now it's popped up in Bradford at the Media Museum. I didn't know about it until I was told but there it is in its glass case, cleaner than it ever was on Coronation Street."

She added: "I'm surprised it survived the dry cleaning process and didn't fall to pieces because it was ancient. I love that Hayley's story is a part of this journey of helping people understand issues that might have been a little bit scary."
