Julian Sands missing: All we know about the search for actor as police continue hunt

Julian Sands has been missing since Friday, January 13 after the actor was identified as one of two hikers who went missing in a California mountain range.

The 65-year-old was identified as one of two hikers who went missing in the Baldy Bowl area during bad weather in the San Gabriel Mountains, north Los Angeles.

A series of storms have created dangerous mountain conditions plaguing California in the past week.

Already two other hikers have recently died in the area.

A statement from San Bernardino County Sheriff's department, shared with PA news agency, read: "On Friday January 13, at about 7.30pm, a hiker, identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood was reported missing in the Baldy Bowl area.

"Sheriff’s department search and rescue crews responded and began a search."

Since news broke of the search for the actor, who appeared in Oscar-nominated film A Room With A View, police undertook a search and rescue operation.

However, ground rescue teams had to abandon their search at the weekend due to the risk of an avalanche and trail conditions.

Drone and helicopters continued the search and a ground search will resume once it's been deemed safe to do so.

Another hiker found

On January 24, it was revealed another hiker had been found in the search.

It was revealed he had suffered some weather-related injuries and a leg injury but was able to walk out with the assistance of the crew members and had been transported to a local hospital.

Meanwhile, the search for Julian continued while police said "no evidence of his current location has been discovered".

However, authorities said the hunt would continue, weather and ground conditions permitting as the second week of the search drew to a close.

Julian's family issue statement

On Monday January 23, Julian's family issued a statement and said they were "deeply touched" by the support they had received.

In a statement, Julian's family praised the "heroic" efforts of the Californian authorities who have been tirelessly tracing the actor.

"Our heartfelt thanks to the compassionate members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department who are coordinating the search for our beloved Julian, not least the heroic search teams listed below who are braving difficult conditions on the ground and in the air to bring Julian home," the statement read.

"We are deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support."

Federal agencies join search

Over the weekend on January 21, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said that federal and state agencies were assisting in the search highlights that efforts to find the actor have increased.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the department told PA: "We are working with state and federal agencies that have cell phone forensics to assist us in pinpointing a location, but so far no new info has been developed."

Julian's phone pings

On Friday January 20, it was reported that Julian's phone appeared to show the actor still on the move two days after he was reported missing.

However, PA later reported the delays mean the activity appeared to show Julian on the move in the day he went missing.

A spokesperson for San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said: "On January 15, 2023, phone pings showed Sands to be heading to the Mount Baldy area.

"Additional phone pings from the cell provider were attempted but were unsuccessful, due to the lack of cell service and most likely cell phone power failure.

"A delayed ping through Sands’ Apple iPhone operating system, from January 14, 2023, provided a possible location on one of the trails leading to the summit of Mount Baldy. This area was checked by ground searchers and by helicopter.

"Ground and air searchers were unable to locate any evidence in this area that would assist in locating Mr. Sands. Because of avalanche risks and trail conditions, the ground crews were pulled off the mountain on Saturday evening.

"However, the search continues by helicopter and drones when the weather permits. Additional ground searches will be scheduled when the weather improves, and it is safe for our rescue crews."

Julian Sands' car found

On Thursday afternoon on January 19, it was reported the Yorkshire-born actor's abandoned car had been found.

Footage showed the scene in Mount Baldy, California as a silver Volvo estate car, believed to be Sands' was towed away.

The top of the car is seen on the top to vehicle as it was on a recovery truck. However, the search for Sands continues.

Julian Sands' son joins in search

Julian Sands' son Henry joined the search for the missing actor on January 19.

On Thursday morning it was reported he had been retracting the route his father took with the assistance of an experienced climber.

Julian shares his son Henry with his ex-wife, journalist Sarah Sands.

He is also dad to adult daughter Imogen and Natalya, whom he shares with his current wife Evgenia Citkowitz.

Police share warning

Amid the search for the actor, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department took to social media to issue an important warning to others in the area to 'think twice' and avoid the 'extremely dangerous' mountain and surrounding area.

A statement posted on their Instagram read: "Over the last four weeks, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR) Teams have responded to 14 rescue missions on Mt Baldy and in the surrounding area.

"These rescue missions have been for lost, stranded and/or injured hikers. Unfortunately, during these past 4 weeks, two hikers did not survive after falling and injuring themselves."

It added: "Please know the current conditions on Mt Baldy are adverse and extremely dangerous. Due to the high winds, the snow has turned to ice making hiking extremely dangerous.

"Sheriff’s Search and Rescue efforts are often hampered by poor weather along with dangerous avalanche conditions. The recent storms that brought the snow and ice conditions are not favorable for hikers, even those that feel they have a high level of experience."

The warning concluded with some tips to "keep yourself and others safe" and reminds residents, "If you don't know, please don't go!"
