Julian Nagelsmann to Chelsea latest: Meeting confirmed, Todd Boehly concern, Bayern negotiations

Chelsea are actively searching for a new manager to replace Graham Potter at Stamford Bridge after Todd Boehly sacked his second manager of the season. Graham Potter was dismissed just six months after he replaced Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.

Julian Nagelsmann is favourite to replace Potter as Blues boss but the process of appointing a new head coach will not be rushed, football.london understands. Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich last month with former Chelsea manager Tuchel replacing him at the German outfit.

Luis Enrique has already held talks with the Blues after travelling to London to present his ideas and talk with club officials about the vacant position, football.london understands. Nagelsmann now looks set to get his chance to meet with the Blues after being invited to an interview.

With that said, football.london takes a look at the latest news regarding Nagelsmann's future and reports linking him with a move to Chelsea.

Face to face meeting confirmed

Julian Nagelsmann has now joined Luis Enrique as a manager to undergo in-person talks with Chelsea regarding their vacant managerial position. Face to face talks took place last Thursday as revealed by The Times over the weekend.

An outright favourite for the job is yet to be identified but the Blues are said to be upping their plans in the coming weeks to find a permanent replacement with interim boss Frank Lampard not one of the candidates to arrive on a full-time basis.

Nagelsmann set for Chelsea interview

Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has been invited to present his ideas and meet with Chelsea officials as the club searches for a new permanent head coach. Graham Potter was sacked just six months after replacing Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge following a poor run of results.

As reported by German news outlet BILD, Nagelsmann has been invited to introduce himself personally to Chelsea officials and present his ideas to the club. The ex-Bayern coach watched EHC Munich's ice hockey playoff against Wolfsburg on Wednesday after a short vacation in South Tyrol and now looks set to travel to London for talks with the Blues.

Bayern Munich negotiations

One potential barrier to any move would be that clubs will reportedly have to deal with Bayern Munich to negotiate a deal due to the clauses in Nagelsmann's contract, with the club on the hook for his wages until he joins a new team or until the end of his deal.

However, Bayern are open to negotiate with any club to let Julian Nagelsmann leave in order to save his salary until 2026, according to Fabrizio Romano.

"Nagelsmann, also open to discuss a long-term project with Chelsea. No club to club talks on compensation yet, at this stage," Romano tweeted.

Concerns

Chelsea's owners have concerns over Julian Nagelsmann's age with the 35-year-old one of the names on the shortlist to replace Graham Potter, according to Sky Sports.

Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich last month, but, despite wanting to take a break until the summer, he is willing to listen to what Chelsea have to say. The German is favourite to replace Potter at Stamford Bridge, football.london understands.

Potter replacement 'appreciated'

According to Fabrizio Romano, Julian Nagelsmann has always been 'appreciated' by Chelsea as a future top coach. Ironically, the 35-year-old was replaced by Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich earlier this month.

Nagelsmann friend drops hint

Ernst Tanner, Julian Nagelmann's close friend and former youth team coach, has offered his opinion on where the German's next move could be. Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich and replaced by former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel during the international break.

Tanner believes his close friend, Nagelsmann, should take a break before deciding his next move, but sees the English top division as the next 'logical step'. Tanner told SPORT1: "The coaching market is very tight, especially in the top segment, and German coaches are incredibly important abroad.

"So Julian doesn't need to worry about his next job. Despite his young age, he has experienced everything in Germany and I don't know to what extent that still appeals to him.

"Real [Madrid] will definitely be an option again, but in terms of language and interests, I see England as the next and logical step. Whether that has to be Tottenham in all haste, I dare to doubt.

"We have known and trusted each other for 20 years. I would advise him to take a break first, to reflect and not jump too quickly into the next shark tank. He also needs the time to regenerate and to prepare well for the next station."

Nagelsmann stance

According to Sky Sports Germany, Chelsea are continuing to support Potter behind the scenes, but that hasn't stopped Nagelsmann from working himself onto the club's radar. The report states Tottenham is not an option for the German and it's 'unlikely' that he'd take on a new job straight away so soon after being sacked by Bayern Munich.

Nagelsmann on Premier League move

Speaking to The Telegraph in 2021 when he was manager of RB Leipzig, the 35-year-old said: "I have a contract now until 2023 so I think I will stay in Leipzig.

"The Premier League is a very interesting league and I can imagine it could be a big aim to be a big manager in the Premier League one day like Jurgen [Klopp] who is very successful. It could be a step in the future. But, you know, in soccer it’s not that easy to plan ‘how long will you be a manager in Leipzig? When will you go to the Premier League?’

"I could imagine going to the Premier League. I could imagine staying as a manager in the Bundesliga for my whole career. It’s cool to be a manager in my own country. I love it. But then perhaps in the future we can meet face-to-face in the Premier League, who knows."

Chelsea's 'strong' Julian Nagelsmann bond

According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, the new hierarchy at Stamford Bridge have a long-standing relationship with the former Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig man. "[Christopher] Vivell and Nagelsmann have a strong connection since years," he wrote on Twitter.

"They have worked together in Leipzig. They share the same ideas of football. Usually Nagelsmann wanted to make a break until summer. Things and plans could change now."

Both Vivell and Nagelsmann were at Leipzig together in 2021 whereas Laurence Stewart, another key director for the Blues, was there from 2018 to 2020 and overlapped in the latter part of his time at the Bundesliga side.

Pep Guardiola influence

Nagelsmann has admitted he studies Pep Guardiola and the way he coaches his teams but insisted he was not his "idol". He said: "He's a role model, but 'idol' is a term for people you know very well."

The German added: "I have certain principles I basically do not compromise on. They always apply, no matter what the score is, who the opponents are or who is playing.

"When you're dealing with people, you have to be flexible on certain points. That's quite normal. You have to approach people, be empathetic as a coach or leader and try to respond to the needs of your opposite number.

"There are certain things that should always apply. But there are also things in life where you can be a bit more laissez-faire [leaving things to take their own course]."

Chelsea stance

football.london understands Nagelsmann is someone Chelsea are seriously looking at to replace Potter following his departure on Sunday evening. The 35-year-old German coach, who was recently sacked by Bayern Munich, has all of the attributes and the characteristics to be a success at Stamford Bridge, the club believe.

Four-man shortlist revealed

Those that are being considered to replace Potter are Nagelsmann, ex-Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique and Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti. It is also said that the club wish to interview at least five candidates for the post.

Nagelsmann is the current favourite with the bookies but he and Pochettino are both heavily linked with other top jobs around Europe including at Tottenham and Real Madrid.

Nagelsmann stance on Tottenham

Former Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann is open to talks with Tottenham over replacing Antonio Conte, according to Sky Sports. However, the report does suggest he may seek a short period of reflection before returning to management.

Bayern decision

Bayern Munich have made the decision to dismiss manager Julian Nagelsmann. It comes as the German champions sit second in the Bundesliga, one point from top. Nagelsmann had guided his side through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, however.

Potter sacked

Chelsea face a major managerial decision in the next few days after confirming the sacking of Graham Potter. The Blues lost to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday with the result being the final straw in the patience of co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

The club statement released on Sunday read: "Chelsea FC has announced that Graham Potter has departed the club. Graham has agreed to collaborate with the Club to facilitate a smooth transition. In his time with the club, Graham has taken us to the quarter-final of the Champions League, where we will face Real Madrid. Chelsea would like to thank Graham for all his efforts and contribution and wish him well for the future."
