Julian Alvarez set for new Man City deal that includes bumper pay rise

Julian Alvarez is set to double his money as he closes in on a new Manchester City contract.

Alvarez, 23, has impressed Blues bosses with the impact he has been able to make at the Etihad and will be rewarded with a significant pay rise up to £100,000-a-week as well as adding an extra year to his contract duration to keep him until 2028 to reflect his progression. The deal is in the final stages and could be announced as early as the coming days after the player and his representatives were quick to reach an agreement with the club.

After being recommended by City Football Group director and longtime Pep Guardiola friend Joan Patsy, Alvarez was signed by the Blues in January 2022 for £14m. He moved over to Manchester that summer after catching the eye of Guardiola and his first-team coaches first with his performances for River Plate and then in pre-season with the Premier League champions.

Alvarez settled quickly, and has played a significant role for the team in his first season in English football. While showing patience to wait for his chances given the prolific level of Erling Haaland, the Argentine has already hit double figures for goals for the season and has shone with his work rate off the ball to fill the void left by Gabriel Jesus when he departed for Arsenal in summer.

The 23-year-old also stepped into the spotlight at the World Cup, working his way into the Argentina team by being a perfect foil for Lionel Messi up front and going all the way to leave Qatar with a winners' medal. That topped off an incredible year for Alvarez, who was named as the seventh best men's player in 2022 in the Fifa The Best awards held last month.
