Julian Alvarez opens up on Erling Haaland partnership after first Man City goal

Julian Alvarez says he can be Manchester City's versatile man in attack to help win trophies, after coming off the bench to score his first goal in Blue on Saturday.

Alvarez, a £14m signing from River Plate, was unlucky to be named on the bench against Liverpool in the Community Shield after two good pre-season displays. But he may have to get used to that with Erling Haaland City's new main man.

However, with City needing a goal, Alvarez was brought on, operating from the right and then through the middle alongside Haaland — and he drew City level with a poacher's finish from close range. Speaking after the game, which Liverpool won 3-1, Alvarez reiterated that he's happy to play wherever he is asked.

"Obviously, I'm very happy for scoring my first goal with City, but that stays aside because it wasn't the result we wanted to start the season winning the trophy," he told City's media team after the game.

"It's tough, obviously we didn't want to start this way. We don't like to lose. We need to keep working. It's going to be a good season to fight for all the trophies and we need to carry on working this way.

"Always I try to give my best in training, I've shown I can play different positions at my clubs and with the national team. I can offer alternatives to the team with this versatility, I can offer different solutions and I want to give my best to help the team."

Many fans had been wondering where Alvarez would fit in the team with Haaland expected to play most of the games up front on his own. So it was encouraging to see Alvarez impress on the right wing and then alongside Haaland in a front two.

"Obviously it's very new for me, my first game in England. I saw a great atmosphere," Alvarez continued, reflecting on his English debut.

"Two teams with all their fans. I'm very happy with this atmosphere, I saw a good atmosphere on the pitch and off the pitch too. It's very nice to be involved.

"Liverpool have shown in the last years how good they are. They're a great team with great players. So is City. It was a good test to start the season, we played well and played at a good level but we need to keep working to get the results."
