Julian Alvarez explains why he was surprised by Man City teammate Rico Lewis

Julian Alvarez is hoping to put in several more great performances, like the one he registered against Sevilla, for Manchester City.

City rounded out their Champions League group campaign in belated style on Wednesday as they came from behind to defeat Sevilla 3-1. The Blues were flat in the first half of the dead rubber and fell behind to Rafa Mir's header.

Pep Guardiola clearly wasn't happy with the display and the Blues came out with added impetus after the break, with Alvarez breathing life into the dull affair. It was the Argentine's sleek through ball that set up teenager Rico Lewis for the equaliser.

Alvarez then fired City ahead as he rounded the keeper following Kevin De Bruyne's brilliant pass and he also teed up Riyad Mahrez for the third after he won the ball back with some relentless pressing. Alvarez was proud of his display and is aiming for many more. With Erling Haaland currently sidelined, he may get the chance too.

“It's always good for a striker playing games," he said. "I always try to work hard to be available for the coach and play as many minutes as possible.

"I'm happy because I have had lots of opportunities in the last few games. I'm grateful and I will keep working to improve. Today it was a goal and an assist and a good game for me, so it's always good for my confidence. I'm very proud of my performance. I want to carry on working the same way."

Despite Alvarez' match-winning contributions, it was 17-year-old Lewis who walked away with the most plaudits. The striker also had praise for his young teammate.

“When I arrived at the club last summer and saw Rico [Lewis], I was positively surprised," Alvarez added. "He is very young and a very talented player, he has lots of good qualities. He has a lot of room for growth and I'm very happy about his development.”
