Julen Lopetegui offers surprising Liverpool 'truth' after Wolves defeat

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Julen Lopetegui admits Liverpool deserved more after they were thumped by his struggling side.

Relegation-threatened Wolves moved out of the Premier League drop zone by inflicting a 3-0 embarrassment on the Reds on Saturday afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had won at Molineux in the FA Cup last month but were comprehensively undone by a Joel Matip own goal and a Craig Dawson strike early on before Ruben Neves notched in the second half.

And Lopetegui said: “We are happy we won. We get three important points but it’s only three points. We haven’t done anything at the moment so we have to continue working hard.

“We had a very good first half and in the second half they pushed hard, and they are one of the best teams in the world so you know you are going to suffer. After 20-25 minutes we regained a bit more control and could attack in the spaces and scored the third goal to win the game.

“Liverpool were taking a bit of risk and it was easier for us to break on them.”

Liverpool dominated after the interval as they sought a response, and Lopetegui admits Wolves were fortunate to escape not conceding.

“We always want to start well, and then continue and finish well!" he said. "We try to put a big rhythm at the start.

“Liverpool are a fantastic team and in the second half they deserved a little bit more in the first 20 minutes, this is true. But sometimes you deserve more and sometimes you don’t. But we deserved to win the match.”

Goalscorer Dawson was making his debut after moving from West Ham United, and Lopetegui added: “I prefer to praise all the team. It was the first match for Craig and he is going to improve us. He has big experience and is important for us. It’s the moment to highlight all the players including the ones who didn’t play today.”
