Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes gained notoriety around the league during his debut season by throwing some impressive no-look passes.
They’ve become a staple of his game and something that he organically works in when he thinks it can help the team gain an advantage. With so many new receivers in the room in Kansas City this offseason, some of them are still adjusting to Mahomes’ style of play.
Asked to provide his first impressions of Mahomes, free agent addition JuJu Smith-Schuster said that he’s been impressed by the no-look passes. Mahomes threw one while Smith-Schuster was on the sideline during practice today. Seeing it in person left Smith-Schuster wowed.
“Today he did the no-look pass and I just like (stunned),” Smith-Schuster said. “He got me and I was on the sideline. I guess everyone saw it, I thought I was the only one who saw it. But (Patrick Mahomes) got our linebacker (Willie) Gay and it threw him off, thinking he was going outside, but he went inside. It was just like, ‘Wow.'”
This technically isn’t the first time that Smith-Schuster had seen a no-look pass from Mahomes. When the two played together in 2018-19 Pro Bowl, Mahomes’ lone throw to Smith-Schuster was a no-look pass. Unfortunately, for Mahomes and Smith-Schuster, the play wasn’t successful.
“I got one of those too, during the Pro Bowl and it went through my hands because I didn’t expect him to throw the rock to me,” Smith-Schuster said. “He was rolling out right and I was running across the field and he was looking straight down the field, but he threw a bullet straight to me and I’m running a shallow. And I was like, ‘Okay, that’s Pat.’ That’s what I’ve got to expect.”
Back in the Pro Bowl, Smith-Schuster says he wasn’t thinking about ever playing with Mahomes. Now that he’s in Kansas City and playing with the Mahomes, he’s feeling blessed for the opportunity. He’s also excited for his opportunity to eventually catch one of Mahomes’ signature no-look passes.
“I haven’t gotten one yet this training camp,” Smith-Schuster said. “So, we’ll see.”
