The jury selection process for the upcoming trial in New York is set to be a meticulous and thorough procedure. A total of 12 jurors, along with six alternates, will be selected from a pool of hundreds of New Yorkers. The selection process is expected to extend beyond the first week of the trial.
Court officials anticipate that approximately 500 new jurors will appear daily starting Monday to participate in the selection process. Groups of about 100 prospective jurors at a time will be brought into Judge Juan Merchan’s courtroom for evaluation.
The judge has unveiled a questionnaire that will be administered to potential jurors. This questionnaire includes a series of questions that could provide insights into the political leanings of the individuals being vetted.
Some of the key topics that potential jurors may be questioned about include their news consumption habits, affiliations with groups such as the Proud Boys, QAnon, and Antifa, attendance at Trump rallies or anti-Trump events, exposure to materials from Michael Cohen and Donald Trump, opinions on whether a former president can be charged in state court, and views on the treatment of Trump in the case.
These questions hold significant weight as they will assist the judge in disqualifying jurors who may not be able to render an impartial verdict. Additionally, both legal teams will utilize the responses to strike jurors from the pool based on various considerations, making the jury selection process a critical aspect of the trial.
