Judge Expands Gag Order In Trump Hush Money Trial

Donald Trump to testify in New York civil fraud trial

The judge overseeing Donald Trump’s criminal hush money trial has expanded a recently imposed gag order to include family members of the court and family members of the Manhattan district attorney. This decision comes after Trump made comments against Judge Juan Merchan’s daughter, prompting the judge to express concerns about the potential fear instilled in those involved in the proceedings and their loved ones.

Judge Merchan emphasized that Trump’s rhetoric could interfere with the fair administration of justice and undermine the Rule of Law. The judge warned that the threats posed by Trump's attacks are real and called for more than just admonitions and self-restraint to maintain the integrity of the judicial proceedings.

Following a request from the Manhattan district attorney’s office, the gag order was extended to prevent Trump from making public statements about family members of individuals involved in the case. This move came after Trump violated the initial gag order by targeting witnesses, jurors, prosecutors, court staff, and their family members.

Trump's defense team argued against the expansion of the gag order, claiming that it already restricted his First Amendment rights to defend himself and engage in campaign speech. However, Judge Merchan dismissed these arguments as baseless and described them as a desperate attempt to justify Trump's dangerous rhetoric.

Despite Trump's lawyers requesting a recusal motion to remove Judge Merchan from the case, the judge denied this request, citing lack of merit. The trial is set to begin in two weeks, with Trump facing legal challenges regarding his statements and conduct during the proceedings.
