The January transfer window is beginning to kick into gear and the spotlight has shone on Liverpool's midfield issues.
Criticism and external demands are aplenty as Jurgen Klopp's once-immovable force has shown gaps in their resistance. Just months after chasing an unprecedented quadruple, the Reds sit seven points off of the top four and 16 off the pace.
Their torrid outing against Brentford to kick off 2023 saw them miss out on the opportunity to apply pressure on Antonio Conte's Tottenham Hotspur after their slip-up.

Nineteenth-placed Wolves became the latest team to prove problematic for the Reds as Julen Lopetegui's side drew 2-2. But the West Midlands came away from Anfield feeling aggrieved Tote Gomes' effort was ruled out late on to deny them an outright place in the FA Cup fourth round.
As the rumour mill churns out frequent links with a move to Merseyside, here are how Liverpool fares with the bookmakers:
*Player to be signed before January 31, 2023. Odds via SkyBet subject to change
Jude Bellingham - 10/3 (Second favourite)
The England and Borussia Dortmund midfielder has become one of the hottest prospects in Europe after his stellar World Cup springboarded him to the top of the list. Already for BVB, he has been a key figure in helping them to the Champions League knockouts.
Liverpool's long-standing pursuit of a midfielder may have been turned up a notch after recent displays and the looming possibility of further injury issues.
Klopp's side have been monitoring the 19-year-old but they will face competition with both Manchester City and Real Madrid's interests being piqued following recent displays.
According to the market, he is 1/5 on to stay at Signal Iduna Park with Liverpool coming in as a possible destination. Real and City are 14/1 and 16/1, respectively.
Declan Rice - 6/1 (Second favourite)
Declan Rice's future at West Ham has come under scrutiny in recent months as the midfielder continues to eye Champions League football. The Hammers currently sit just outside the relegation zone in the Premier League but the England international will remain in Europe as part of their Europa Conference League ambitions.
David Moyes has previously discussed the former Chelsea youngster but had set his price-tag in the region of £150m. While their performances haven't matched it, Rice still remains one of the youngest captains in the Premier League and Liverpool could be tempted by his relationship with Jordan Henderson.
The England pair both featured for Gareth Southgate's side in the middle of the pitch as their World Cup ambitions ground to a halt in the last eight.
West Ham could be pushed into a deal this summer, as it remains unlikely this month, with his current contract entering the final 12 months at the end of the season.
Arsenal are the favourites to sign the midfielder, according to the bookmakers, at 4/1 while Liverpool sit second in the running and Chelsea third at 8/1.
Moises Caicedo - 9/4 (Favourite)
According to the bookies, Liverpool are favourites to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo. The Ecuadorian is perceived to be one of the options that can help revitalise the Reds midfield.
Although nothing formal has been confirmed yet, the 21-year-old has proven his worth in the Premier League during the early days of his career in the English top flight.
The combative midfielder seemingly fits the description for a player that Liverpool are after. One who can go box-to-box, make late runs into the box and find the back of the net.
SkyBet are currently only taking prices on two teams with Chelsea being the other option at 3/1 as Graham Potter looks to strengthen his squad and may be tempted for a reunion with one of his former Brighton players.
Sofyan Amrabat - 3/1 (Favourite)
Sofyan Amrabat has been another World Cup breakout who has been linked with a move to Merseyside. The Fiorentina midfielder was one of the standout performers in Morocco's history-making run at Qatar last year.
The 26-year-old is one of the more experienced players on the list and could be a cheap option compared to the players that the Reds have been linked with.
There is nothing concrete with the speculation surrounding any interest from Klopp's side.
According to the bookmakers, Liverpool could face competition from Newcastle, Tottenham, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid for his signature but it is the six-time Champions League winners who are favourites, as per SkyBet.
Youri Tielemans - 12/1
Like Declan Rice, Youri Tielemans' future has been up for debate. The Leicester midfielder has been central to their success in their recent history.
The Belgian's goal in the FA Cup final was a history-making strike as it ended their wait for silverware in the competition. The Foxes could be forced into selling him in January - and leave themselves potentially short - in order to receive a windfall from his sale.
However, should he remain at the King Power this month, it poses the opportunity for him to leave the club on a free transfer in the summer.
As a result, a number of clubs are said to be circulating.
But according to odds provider, Newcastle are the frontrunners to get his signature as they continue their revolution with Arsenal shortly behind. The Gunners have been frequently linked with him in recent seasons with Liverpool and Manchester United ranked as outsiders at 12/1 and 16/1, respectively.
