Council slam 'distasteful' jubilee tribute to Queen sat on a toilet

As we gear up for the much-anticipated Platinum Jubilee this week to celebrate 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II's time on the throne, it’s fair to say some tributes to Her Majesty’s reign have been perhaps more sincere than others.

As people camp outside The Mall in London in preparation for four days of celebratory Bank Holiday events, towns and villages up and down Wales are also planning their own celebrations with a host of different activities. However, anyone driving in Ceredigion towards Aberystwyth may have noticed a different kind of tribute to the Queen in the days leading up to her big day(s). At the side of the A487, as you leave the village of Llanon heading north, someone has placed a display which appears to include a model of Elizabeth II.

But, on closer inspection the image seems to show her actually sitting on a loo, with draws or bloomers that are down by her feet on the floor. The words ‘70 Years on the Throne’ can be seen behind her in big capital letters on a white sheet, surrounded on both sides by small Welsh and Union Jack flags.

There is also a model or a stuffed toy of a Corgi - famously the Queen’s favourite pet - in front of her, while to her right appears to be a figure of a man in military attire. The picture was posted on social media, with most people reacting with hilarity at what they deemed to be a bit of fun.

One woman said: “Ceredigion, for all your beauty and loveliness, you don’t half nauseate me sometimes”. However, the same person later tweeted: “And there was me thinking it was a genuine jubilee celebration! I see it now,” referring to the intended meaning behind the display.

One man said: “70 years on the throne. It’s not a laughing matter. These people (or person) deserve our sympathy - constipation can be extremely painful”, while another said: “Brilliant. It’s nice to see Ceredigion isn’t caving into this nonsense like Cardiff is. Ponty and Trefforest too.” On social media poster said that he “thought it was Del and Rodney”, while another said “Fantastic - well done Ceredigion”.

However, despite the light-hearted manner in which the display was received on social media, Ceredigion Council has labelled it "distasteful" and vowed to have it removed. A spokeswoman for the council said: "An unauthorised distasteful tribute display has been arranged on council land in Llanon ahead of the Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday. The display shall be removed."
