Jubilant Morocco fans climb on giant Welsh bucket hat as they celebrate historic World Cup win over Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal

This is the brilliant moment dozens of Morocco fans set off red smoke flares and "dance on the Welsh hat" in Cardiff city centre, in celebration of their team's historic World Cup quarter final win over Portugal. In this evening's match, Morocco defeated Portugal 1-0, thanks to an impressive goal from Youssef en-Nesyri in the 42nd minute.

And whilst making the semi-finals is a grand achievement in its own right, it's made all the more special by the fact this is the first time any country in Africa has ever made a football World Cup semi-final. Inevitably, Morocco fans across Wales and beyond are celebrating the fantastic result.

Fans of all ages were spotted cheering and dancing next to the giant Welsh bucket hat sculpture on The Hayes in Cardiff - with a daring few attempting to climb on top of it. The hat has become an iconic symbol of Welsh football and the Red Wall at the Qatar World Cup and has drawn attention from across the capital and beyond. But elation for one team of course means devastation for the other. After Morocco's win, Portugal's star player Cristiano Ronaldo was seen leaving the World Cup stadium in a very emotional state.

As Team Morocco celebrated their victory, Ronaldo fought back tears before sulking off the field to head straight down the tunnel. A pitch invader then appeared to speak with him, but security stepped in and escorted the individual away. TV cameras then followed Ronaldo all the way down the tunnel as he cried uncontrollably.

So what went wrong for Portugal?

As our sports writer explains, Youssef En-Nesyri's towering header just before the break proved enough to send Portugal out of the tournament, and book Morocco's place in the last four of the tournament, becoming the first African nation in history to do so.

Ronaldo, as he did for the win over Switzerland, started from the bench at the Al Thumama Stadium, and watched on as his team-mates struggled to break down a resilient and dogged Moroccan defence.

He was then introduced just after the break, coming on for Ruben Neves, but couldn't inspire his team to victory, despite forcing a fine save from Yassine Bounou late on.

At the age of 37, this was likely his last chance to finally win a World Cup, and the weight of seeing his dream fall apart was clearly too much when the final whistle was blown.
