Jrue Holiday on why he put the Celtics at the top of his list

Jrue Holiday had the Boston Celtics at the top of his preferred trade destinations. His addition to the roster has ensured the Celtics are seen as championship favorites ahead of the new season. The All-Star guard brings elite-level defense, especially at the point of attack, and is also a potent offensive threat.

When speaking to the media as part of his inaugural press conference, Holiday was asked what drew him to see Boston as a potential landing spot. For Holiday, the answer was easy: the Celtics are a “championship-caliber organization,” and he wanted to be a part of what the franchise is building toward.

“I just look at the resume, right? Look at the history this place has had,” Holiday said. “You look at the organization and everything I’ve always heard about it. You look at how competitive they’ve been in the last five, six years, and even before that…Ever since I’ve been in the league, this has been a championship-caliber organization. It was a very easy decision that this was one of the places I would have loved to come to.”

Holiday will need to adjust to a new role in Boston. Unlike his last season with the Milwaukee Bucks, Holiday will be the fourth or fifth option on offense. Instead, the veteran guards’ remit will be to lock up defensively, provide secondary or tertiary playmaking, and knock down his shots when they come.

The Celtics have upgraded their guard rotation by acquiring Holiday. They have also replaced Marcus Smart in emphatic fashion. Now, the pressure will be on Joe Mazzulla and his coaching staff to ensure the incredibly talented roster can coexist and work toward the goal of raising a banner in the TD Garden.
