Joyful chaos among Wales fans in stadium captured by epic photo

Wales fans have just about calmed down from what many are calling an away day for the ages.

Nathan Broadhead’s last-minute equaliser against a Croatia side that finished third at the last World Cup has given Rob Page’s men a superb start to the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, and predictably sparked joy across the nation in the process.

Gareth Newberry, 44, from Dinas Powys, was one of those present in what was a jubilant away end in Split, and managed to snap the incredible moment Wales drew themselves level.

His picture of shirtless Wales fans tumbling over each other in joy has already proved a hit on social media, with one user pleading to ‘hang it in the Louvre’.

Certainly, it seems highly likely to be an image that will be etched in Wales away folklore.

Speaking to WalesOnline, Newberry said: “It was one of the best away trips, I’ve got to say.

“Everything was like a normal away game really until the last 20 minutes and we just thought ‘we’re not going to get a result here, let’s just have a sing song’.

“Everyone’s shirts just came off and then Modric walked off the pitch and we scored. It was absolute bedlam.

“I was with my dad. He’s 73. So it was all kicking off around us with everyone going bananas and falling around all us, hugging each other. Someone was actually kissing my dad, and I was just hoping he was still upright by the time they stopped celebrating. He was… just about!”

Speaking specifically about his picture, he added: “I just saw everyone below me and thought I’d get my camera out quick. It was such scenes and it was something I wanted to remember, so I’ve got about six or seven of those photos.

“I’ve not seen scenes quite like that before. We’ve been coming to away games for the last 10 years. I don’t know what it was, but it felt like the score didn’t really matter with 20 minutes to go, so we just decided to have a good time. Then just the golden moment to cap it off to go and score.

“We’re Barry Town fans too. Barry actually won the league beforehand, so we were celebrating that out in Croatia. Then they go and score and we get a point.

“So, we had a right day of it.”

It seems they weren’t the only ones. Roll on Turkey in June!
