Josh McDaniels coached the Denver Broncos from 2009-2010, posting an 11-17 record before being fired 12 games into his second season.
He then had a short stint with the St. Louis Rams as an assistant before returning to the New England Patriots, where he remained until this offseason when he was hired by the Las Vegas Raiders to become a head coach again.
McDaniels is now set to face the Broncos on Sunday, but he downplayed the storyline of his return to Denver during his media availability earlier this week.
“I’ve been back there many times as an assistant,” McDaniels said on Wednesday. “I don’t expect it, you know, I mean, I’m not going to — I usually am just focused on the game. Just excited for the opportunity obviously. I know everybody associates bad memories with places that they’ve left if it wasn’t necessarily on your terms, but I don’t really look at it that way.”
McDaniels implied that hard feelings won’t be his focus on Sunday as he instead shifted attention to Las Vegas seeking its first road win of the year.
“They gave me a great opportunity,” McDaniels said of the Broncos. “I was very thankful for that when I got it, still am. … This will not be about me. This will be about our football team trying to on the road and win in the division on the road.”
