Josh Cavallo celebrated and supported by the international football community after coming out as gay

The international football community has rallied around Josh Cavallo after the Adelaide United player's public announcement that he is gay.

Dozens of players, clubs and governing bodies all around the world have posted messages of support for Cavallo, who became the first male Australian footballer to come out while still in his playing career.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford was among those who have assured Cavallo that "the entire football community" stands with him.

"I know this took a lot of courage Josh. Know that the entire football community stands with you," Rashford said in a Twitter post.

"Enjoy this freedom now, enjoy your peace. So much respect for you brother."

Swedish professional footballer and AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimović called Cavallo a "champion" as he retweeted the 21-year-old's emotional video released by the Reds.

"You are a Champion. [Football] is for everybody. Big respect," Ibrahimović said.
