Joseph Siravo dead: The Sopranos star dies at 64 after cancer battle

The Sopranos star Joseph Siravo has died at 64 after a long battle with cancer.

The actor - best known for playing Tony Soprano's father Johnny in the hit HBO mobster show - passed away on Sunday.

The sad news was confirmed by fellow actor Gerry Pastore who posted about Siravo's death on Instagram.

He shared a picture of Siravo and wrote: "RIP my dear friend, who fought an incredible fight. I will miss you. See you on the other side."

Gerry added: "He was a true gent to boot and as you well know hard to find that mutual bond and sincerity. Acting has always been a passion and finding true friends that lift you up and support was often difficult.

"Myself, Joe, Michael Rispoli [who played Jackie Aprile Sr.} and Jimmy Gandolfini [Tony Soprano] always supported each other even when up for the same roles, it’s how we rolled."

Fellow Sopranos star Lillo Brancato Jr., who played young mobster Matthew Bevilaqua, commented: "Oh wow RIP" alongside a praying hands emoji and a love heart.

Siravo hailed from Washington, D.C. and attended New York's famous Tisch School of the Arts and Stanford University before launching his acting career.

His screen debut came in 1993 when he landed a role in Carlito's Way opposite Sean Penn and Al Pacino.

In 1997, he was cast in an episode of Law & Order before kanding the part of Tony Soprano's father Johnny in The Sopranos.

He landed the part in 1999 and appeared in five episodes in in flashback scenes revealing Tony's turbulent relationship with his parents and how he took hi first steps into the world of the mob.

Siravo went on to play real life mobster John Gotti in 2015 movie The Wannabe and he was also seen as Fred Goldman - the father of murdered Ron Goldman - in TV drama The People v. O. J. Simpson.

As well as TV and movies, he was also a regular onstage, appearing both on and off Broadway and in a US tour of hit musical Jersey Boys.
