Jose Mourinho's Mikel Arteta verdict proven right following Arsenal's win vs Tottenham

Arsenal secured a famous North London Derby win on Sunday, beating local rivals Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 win in their Premier League clash

A huge blunder from Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris handed the Gunners the lead after 14 minutes before Martin Odegaard doubled their advantage 22 minutes later with a well-placed drive from outside the box. Mikel Arteta's side then defended excellently in the second half, with some help provided by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale - who earned Gary Neville's man of the match.

It was the seventh time Arsenal have kept a clean sheet away from home in just nine Premier League outings this term, a hugely impressive feat. That kind of form sees them sit on top of the current league standings, eight points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, a far cry from the position they found themselves in this time 25 months ago when they visited the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Lillywhites secured a 2-0 victory that day, meaning the Gunners were floundering back in 15th. Pressure was beginning to build on Arteta's shoulders but then-Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho was full of praise for the Spaniard. “I want to give good words and congratulations to Mikel because he gave us a very difficult game", Mourinho said at full-time.

“Tactically, they are very good, they were very well organised, they were building with four, defending with five. Then in the second half, they tried to find triangles on the side and they gave us problems, problems that we managed to resolve because the players in this moment have good tactical culture.

“And even above that, they have an incredible spirit, but they gave us problems because they are a good team and he (Arteta) is a good coach. But we deserved to win, I guess, because two amazing goals.”

The former Chelsea boss added: “I can imagine tomorrow there, that the headlines will be about them not being in a good position on the table. But I believe with these players, with Mikel, Arsenal will be Arsenal again.”

Mourinho has since been proven right in his assessment of Arteta, who has been instrumental in the Gunners' upturn in form. Bringing the north Londoners their first league title in 19 years would certainly make the Spaniard an Arsenal legend, although there is still a long way to go in the title race.
