Jose Mourinho issues fierce Europa League warning to Rangers

Jose Mourinho has warned Rangers not to celebrate too much after their first leg win over Fenerbahce.

The vastly experienced coach admitted Barry Ferguson's side deserved their victory in Istanbul before issuing advice against celebrating the Europa League triumph too much.

"They were pragmatic, they were competitive and they deserved the victory," said Mourinho.

"The only thing I tell them is don't celebrate too much because there is a second match to play.

"That's my only advice, then, if after the second game they celebrate then I will congratulate them.

"But now, calm down because it is not over."

Mourinho insisted he was not surprised by Rangers in the match as he cited "20 injuries" and Jack Butland holding onto the ball for "30 seconds" when reflecting on a "pragmatic" display.

"I was not surprised, they were pragmatic, they were defensive, they played on the counter-attack," said the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager.

"Every time Jack Butland had the ball he took not the famous six or eight seconds, he took 30 seconds every time he had the ball in his hands.

"They had 20 injuries, they were pragmatic."

Rangers host Fenerbahce in the second leg of the round of 16 tie on Thursday, March 13.
