Jose Mourinho has tried to warn Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag about Cristiano Ronaldo

Jose Mourinho has already warned Manchester United and Erik ten Hag about Cristiano Ronaldo.

Last weekend it was revealed that Ronaldo had told United he wishes to leave Old Trafford this summer if a 'reasonable offer' is submitted for his services. It is understood that the 37-year-old is unhappy about a wage cut he has received after United dropped into the Europa League as well as their slow start to the transfer window.

On Monday, MEN Sport reported that Ronaldo was not in training due to 'family reasons'. It was revealed on Thursday that the forward will not be travelling with United for their pre-season tour in Thailand having been given additional time to deal with a 'family issue'.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich have both been linked with a move for the forward. And speaking back in 2013 when the pair were at Real Madrid, Mourinho revealed an issue he had managing the Portuguese great.

He explained to the Daily Telegraph (via Bleacher Report): "A coach and player may have their differences at a given time, but it ends there. I don't have any problem.

"I had only one problem with him, very simple, very basic. When a coach criticises a player from a tactical viewpoint trying to improve what in my view could have been improved.

"And at this moment he didn't take it very well because maybe he thinks he knows everything and the coach cannot help him to develop anymore."

It remains unclear whether Ronaldo will be a part of the United set-up come the start of the 2022/23 season. However, one thing that is clear is Ten Hag will be bringing a dramatically different style of play to Old Trafford.

The Dutchman will need every player in his squad to buy into his philosophy and work for the good of the team. Whether Ronaldo will be willing to do so following Mourinho's warning is not so clear.
