Jose Mourinho 'has already told' Roma bosses his plan for end of this season

Jose Mourinho is expected to leave Roma at the end of the season.

Mourinho still has one year remaining on his contract but has failed to guide the Italian club into the top four of Serie A. Roma lost 2-1 at Fiorentina on Saturday and are sixth in the table, four points behind AC Milan in fourth with just one game remaining.

Mourinho has enjoyed success with Roma - winning the inaugural Europa Conference League a year ago and reaching this season's Europa League final - but there is a growing mutual feeling in the Italian capital that it could be time for the manager to depart.

As relayed by Get Italian football News Now, reports in Italy claim Mourinho will leave his position after Roma's final game of the season at home to Spezia next Sunday.

Roma's season will be defined by the Europa League final against Sevilla in Budapest on Wednesday. The winners of that game will qualify for the Champions League.

There is a belief that Mourinho might stay at Roma if his team win the Europa League, but only a small one. It's thought now is the right time for Roma to part company with Mourinho, with his stock high again after a successful spell at the Stadio Olimpico.

Many critics thought Mourinho's time as a top European manager was up after he was sacked by Tottenham in April 2021, with his previous major honour coming at Manchester United four years earlier. Spurs axed him just days before losing the Carabao Cup final.

Yet Mourinho has rebuilt his reputation at Roma. Their 1-0 win against Feyenoord in the Europa Conference League final secured the club's first ever major European trophy... and they will end this season with a second continental honour if they can beat Sevilla.

Paris Saint-Germain are thought to be interested in appointing Mourinho as manager this summer, with Luis Enrique also in the frame. Current PSG boss Christophe Galtier is facing the sack after failing to challenge in Europe... which is Mourinho's speciality.

Mourinho is the only manager to win all three major European club competitions currently in existence, winning five major European honours in total. He also won the now-defunct European Cup Winners' Cup as Bobby Robson's assistant at Barcelona.

Mourinho won the UEFA Cup (now called the Europa League) and Champions League in consecutive years during his time at Porto before winning the latter competition again at Inter Milan. He then won a second Europa League crown at Man Utd.

As for Roma, they will be looking for a manager who can win the Serie A title. Italy's top flight is one of the most open divisions in Europe, with four different clubs - Juventus, Inter Milan, Milan and Napoli - winning the last four titles.
