Jose Mourinho confronted by 'angry' opponent twice as pressure piles on Roma manager

Jose Mourinho was confronted by an angry Domenico Berardi following Roma’s dramatic 2-2 draw against Sassuolo on Sunday night.

Roma needed a 94th-minute header from Bryan Cristante to pick up a point after an end-to-end match in Serie A.

Tammy Abraham opened the scoring from the penalty spot following a handball to net his 18th goal of the season in all competitions.

But Sassuolo came back into it after the break when Rui Patricio made a howler, spilling a tame cross which had taken a deflection off Chris Smalling.

Hamed Traore put the home team 2-1 up in the 73rd minute before Sassuolo captain Gian Marco Ferrari was sent off after picking up a second yellow card five minutes later.

Cristante headed in at the near post from a corner to earn Roma a late point, but Mourinho remains under pressure, with his side in seventh place, six points adrift of the top four.

There was further drama off the pitch as Sassuolo winger Berardi sought out Mourinho to have an argument with him on two occasions

Corriere dello Sport reports that the disagreement stemmed from an incident at the end of the match when Berardi went down holding his face following contact with Roma’s Marash Kumbulla.

Kumbulla accused the Italian international of milking it and when he was substituted five minutes later he sought out Mourinho on the touchline.

The duo continued their argument after the final whistle, with Berardi eventually being dragged away by Sassuolo manager Alessio Dionisi.

It was just one flash point of an emotional night for Mourinho, who was forced to hit back at reports that he could leave Roma after just one season with the club.

Despite spending big in the summer on players, Mourinho has won just three of his last nine games in all competitions and is reportedly considering leaving after an apparent bust-up in the dressing room .

"It's fifth-rate journalism, journalism without ethics, journalism without the essence of journalism which is the truth,” he told DAZN post-match.

"The quality we have that cannot be questioned is our togetherness, we're unbeatable in that.

“We can be poor, I can be too, but no-one can say we're not a united group, no-one can damage this team.

"We may have technical limitations, the second goal we conceded will give me nightmares as will some other incidents, but we're a very united group."

Roma will look to get back to winning ways when they host Verona in Serie A on Saturday.
