Jose Enrique urges Newcastle United to sign 'world-class striker' in the transfer window

Jose Enrique believes Newcastle United should splash out on a “world-class striker” to help fire the club up the Premier League table. Recent reports have linked the Magpies to Benfica striker Darwin Nunez and Everton hitman Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the Spaniard name-checking the latter when discussing his former club.

Current number nine Callum Wilson has impressed since returning from a torn calf but there are question marks over his ability to stay fit long-term. Chris Wood - signed for £25million in January - has struggled for form while Dwight Gayle is tipped for a move to the Championship.

Wilson finished the season as Newcastle's top scorer with eight in 2021-22 despite making just 18 top-flight appearances. The next highest was Allan Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimaraes on five - highlighting the lack of goals from forward areas.

Signing a proven, reliable goalscorer could transform United’s ambitions for next season and Enrique says that is exactly what Eddie Howe should do. The retired left-back admitted he “likes” Calvert-Lewin but also has concerns over the England striker’s injury record.

“I believe they (Newcastle) should bring in a world-class striker,” he told bettingexpert. “Even if they have Callum Wilson and Chris Wood. It depends on what Eddie (Howe) sees every day in training.

“They were talking about (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin. I really, really like Calvert-Lewin. Same thing again, he had big problems with injuries this season so I’m not sure if Newcastle will sign him but obviously Eddie knows him well.”
