Rangers are shaping up for a waiting game as their move for Jose Cifuentes is put on temporary hold.
The Ibrox outfit are keen to get a deal done for the Los Angeles FC star having already negotiated a rough agreement several weeks ago. But the finer points of the £1million package required to land his signature have yet to be thrashed out despite claims Stateside that the Ecuador international’s switch was imminent. Record Sport now understands Rangers chiefs do not expect to be in a position to shake hands with his MLS side for another couple of weeks yet.
Sources close to the 24-year-old midfielder insist Rangers remain his No.1 option as he heads into the final six months of his contract. And with the potential for him to walk away on a free come New Year’s Eve, the club are confident they will still be able to persuade the Americans to sell in plenty time before the start of the new Premiership season.
In the meantime, LAFC boss Steve Cherundolo appears determined to make the most of whatever time he has left with his main man in midfield. Cifuentes – who will need a work permit to complete his move to Scotland – played the full 90 minutes as his side drew 1-1 with MLS rivals San Jose in the early hours of yesterday morning.
LAFC have two more clashes this week with St Louis and Minnesota before the American top flight shuts down for a month, which could offer Gers breathing space for a breakthrough in their talks.
Boss Michael Beale will be content to wait having already done the bulk of his summer business ahead of his team flying out for this week’s summer training camp in Germany.
