Jose Cifuentes branded 'solid' Rangers transfer but expert fires Ibrox warning shot over stalled MLS progress

Rangers have been told that securing the signing of "barrel-chested" Jose Cifuentes would be a solid piece of business for the club.

And that the current LAFC star, who has been linked with a move to Michael Beale's men for some time, would have no qualms over adapting his strong style to suit the Scottish Premiership. The Ecuadorian has been on Rangers' transfer shopping list this summer with a deal said to be in the process of being thrashed out for the 24-year-old who was recently in action for the MLS side. Cifuentes could become Ibrox recruit number eight for the window after Leon Balogun sealed his big return to the club.

Record Sport revealed that a confirmation of his arrival in Glasgow could be some weeks away, but that Ibrox remains Cifuentes' number one intended destination. And Rangers fans have been given an insight in to how the enforcer could play in Beale's system, with South American football expert Tim Vickery surprised the midfielder hasn't progressed as much as his early career suggested he would.

Yet giving his insight to talkSPORT, the BBC reporter reckons the big presence would be a fine addition to Rangers ranks and that his international experience could prove vital to adapting to life in Scotland. He said: "Cifuentes was one of the Under-20 team that came up a few years ago before the pandemic.

"They were South American champions and third in the world. He's a big barrel-chested central midfielder. He went to the World Cup as a reserve, he's been on the fringe now.

"He's been in the MLS with LAFC for a while. But you look at him physically and you think 'no problem adapting to British football'. He can work box-to-box and has a cannon of a shot in him.

"I'm actually expected him to make more progress, to be honest, when I first saw him four years. I thought he was really going to come through, he hasn't quite yet done what I expected but I think he would be a solid piece of business."
