World Cup-winning captain Jos Buttler hopes his team’s triumph can help inspire his football counterparts to similar glory in Qatar.
Buttler acknowledged the message of support from Harry Kane before the five wicket win over Pakistan and will be tuning in to see whether another World Cup can be captured before the year is out.
“I hope it can inspire them,” said Buttler. “Obviously it is the start of a great tournament for them. I saw Harry Kane sent a message wishing good luck to the team, as well. So we're grateful for that. We're all immensely proud.
“We're a fantastic sporting nation, and sport is such a big part of English culture, and we know how well supported we are.
“The fans who travelled here to watch us, millions watching back home, and that support is fantastic.” Buttler was left beaming with the trophy by his side after the game and he was in no doubt just how fortunate he is to have Ben Stokes in his side.
Both Buttler and Eoin Morgan have become World Cup winning captains on the back of sensational Stokes performances and the current skipper is not surprised he keeps delivering.
“He always stands up in the biggest moments,” said Buttler. “He's a man who can take a lot of pressure on his shoulders and perform.
“With him in the middle, you know you've got a good chance. I'm so proud of him and pleased for him. He's stood up and done it again.
“I'm not surprised. He's a true match-winner and he's been there in those scenarios time and time again. We're immensely lucky to have him, he's one of the great players of English cricket.”
