Jorginho set for immediate new role at Arsenal after £12m transfer and Mikel Arteta's verdict

The dust is beginning to settle on what was, as expected, a busy January transfer window for Arsenal as manager Mikel Arteta got his wish of bolstering the first-team squad.

Of course, things weren't plain sailing for the Gunners by any means last month. A strict policy on not being dragged into a bidding war for players ultimately meant they lost out to Chelsea for the signing of talented winger Mykhailo Mudryk, whilst two offers for Moises Caicedo were rejected by Brighton & Hove Albion.

However, Arsenal did have alternatives. Leandro Trossard was recruited to freshen up the attacking options, Jorginho swapped west London for north London as his £12million transfer from Chelsea was confirmed on deadline day and the addition of Jakub Kiwior increases the depth at centre-back.

Of those signings, it's safe to say eyebrows were raised with regard to Jorginho. Judging by the social media reaction on Monday night when football.london revealed the Gunners were interested in signing the 31-year-old, some sections of the fanbase were against this deal - citing William Gallas and Willian as examples.

But in the end, Arsenal got the deal over the line, officially announcing their third signing of the January transfer window at 8pm on deadline day and Arteta was delighted with this piece of business: "Jorginho is a midfield player with intelligence, deep leadership skills and a huge amount of Premier League and international experience," he said.

"Jorginho has won in his career, but he still has the hunger and huge willingness to contribute here. We are so pleased to sign Jorginho and welcome him and his family to the club."

A lot of focus has centred around Jorginho's experience and winning mentality as it could be key in helping a young Arsenal side win the Premier League title for the first time in nearly two decades. After all, the arrivals of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko last summer have helped to transform the club.

Although, it's Arteta's three-word verdict that the Italian has "deep leadership skills" that may hint at the new signing immediately being added to a core group at the Emirates Stadium.

At the beginning of the season, The Athletic have reported that Jesus and Granit Xhaka had been nominated to support newly-appointed captain Martin Odegaard in leadership roles. This has been proved true as the aforementioned pair have donned the armband in the playmaker's absence.

Now, Jorginho is no stranger to wearing the captain's armband either. In fact, he was vice-captain at Chelsea for most of his time in west London and in the club's statement confirming his move to Arsenal, the midfielder is described as "a leader on and off the pitch".

The fact that Arteta pointed out these qualities in Jorginho could mean the 31-year-old is immediately added to the leadership group as the Spaniard has already shown with his decision to include Jesus that time spent at the club isn't too much of an overriding factor to help guide the youngsters.
