Jorginho on standby to replace Thomas Partey with Arsenal stars handed recalls vs Everton

After a busy transfer deadline day, it's back to matters on the pitch as Arsenal continue their pursuit of the Premier League trophy against Everton on Saturday afternoon.

It will be the Gunners' first league fixture since the dramatic 3-2 win over Manchester United last month which maintained their five-point lead at the top of the table as their most recent outing was in the FA Cup where they were beaten by Man City at the fourth round stage.

Preparations for Arsenal's trip to Merseyside and Mikel Arteta's return to Goodison Park have been affected by the business completed on transfer deadline day as well as Sean Dyche set to take charge of the Toffees for the first time since replacing Frank Lampard as manager.

Whilst the Spanish tactician should be in a position to recall several regulars who earned a partial rest at the Etihad Stadium or hand debuts to two of his January signings, he won't be able to call on Mohamed Elneny as the midfielder is set for a spell on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery.

"Following an injury sustained in a recent training session, subsequent assessments have confirmed that Mohamed Elneny has a significant injury to his right knee," a statement reads. "Mo has had successful surgery in London and will be ruled out for an extended period of time.

"A more detailed timescale will be established once the early stages of rehabilitation have been completed. Everyone at the club will be offering Mo all the support he needs and working hard with him so he can return to action as soon as possible."

The situation with regard to Elneny is exactly as it has been for the last three games across all competitions and with that in mind, football.london takes a look at the changes Arteta could make to either his starting XI or matchday squad as Arsenal face Everton away from home in the early kick-off on Saturday.

Jorginho debut

£12m deadline day signing Jorginho has been registered in time to be in contention to make his Arsenal debut against Everton. Ironically, the midfielder has already been on the winning side at Goodison Park this season as he scored from the penalty spot for Chelsea on the opening weekend of the campaign.

With Thomas Partey likely to be passed fit following a rib complaint, the Italy international probably won't start on Saturday but it's almost certain that he will be named in the matchday squad as a replacement for Albert Sambi Lokonga who since the defeat at Man City has joined Crystal Palace on loan.

Smith Rowe return?

It's been a frustrating season for Emile Smith Rowe thus far and having only just returned to the fold following groin surgery back in September, football.london revealed he was left out of the matchday squad altogether against Man City as a precaution over a thigh strain presumably sustained in training.

Now, the good news is that it's not thought to be too serious. Although, whether the 22-year-old takes part in any of the training sessions before the end of the week will ultimately determine if he can be named in the the squad that makes the trip to Goodison Park.

Stars recalled

Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White were both completely rested for the FA Cup tie against Man City, whilst William Saliba, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli were introduced to proceedings at some point during the second half at the Etihad Stadium.

Given all six players have started every Premier League fixture since the season resumed after the World Cup break, it wouldn't be a surprise if they earn an immediate recall for the Everton clash with Matt Turner, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Rob Holding, Kieran Tierney, Fabio Vieira and Leandro Trossard dropping to the bench.
