Jorge Martin sets sights on MotoGP return in Qatar after passing medical exam

After traveling to the United States to support his team from the pit box for the first time this season at the MotoGP Americas Grand Prix at COTA, Jorge Martin received a positive medical check-up with hopes to return to the track as soon as Qatar.

The check-up was conducted Tuesday morning by Dr. Xavier Mir and the surgical team responsible for the World Champion's procedure on February 25 on his left hand. In a statement to Motorsport.com, Dr. Mir shared, "The clinical and radiological examination of the scaphoid, radius and pyramidal fractures of Jorge Martín, present a good evolution that allow [him] to start a new stage in the functional recovery, to get to Qatar and see what sensations the rider has in order to be able to participate in the grand prix, always after passing in MotoGP medical control."

The Aprilia rider has been cleared by his doctors to increase his training intensity, particularly in cardiovascular and cycling exercises. As a result, he is now on track to travel to Doha next week, aiming to make his debut with his new team at the Qatar Grand Prix, the fourth round of the 2025 calendar. If his recovery continues smoothly this week, Martín has medical approval to travel to Qatar. However, if he deems it necessary, he may opt for a final medical check-up at the Dexeus Clinic next week before departing.

Upon arrival in Qatar, Martín will be required to undergo another medical evaluation at the Losail Circuit, conducted by MotoGP Medical Director Ángel Charte. Only Charte has the authority to grant him the official clearance to participate in Friday’s FP1 session, after which he will undergo further assessment.

Following the check-up, Martín shared a photo to his Instagram stories Tuesday, showing himself training on his bicycle in Andorra, the small Pyrenean country where he resides.

The 2024 MotoGP World Champion with Pramac-Ducati sustained his initial injury on the first day of pre-season testing in Sepang while riding the Aprilia, fracturing his right hand. This incident required surgery on February 7.

Following a successful recovery, Martín was medically cleared to compete in the Thai Grand Prix. However, on the eve of his departure, he conducted practice sessions on a supermotard at a karting track in Lleida, where he suffered a severe crash, leading to three fractures in his left hand and necessitating a second surgery in less than three weeks.

Martín, who signed a two-year contract with Aprilia in June of last year, has yet to make his official race debut on the Noale-based manufacturer’s bike.
