Jordan Pickford proves Everton point in six phenomenal moments

Few Evertonians would argue with Jordan Pickford being named the club's player of the season, as was announced on Wednesday afternoon.

In what was a dismal campaign for the side as a whole, the goalkeeper was someone who kept his performances consistently strong. Particularly in the latter stages of the campaign he was called upon in crucial moments to produce a number of stunning saves to make sure his side picked up the points they needed.

He was someone who was under a lot of scrutiny about 18 months ago, but he now looks like the complete goalkeeper. Here, we've remembered six of his best stops throughout the campaign as he stepped up to really prove his worth.

Indeed, Pickford also scooped the ECHO's Everton Player of the Year award with a massive 47% of the vote.

vs Watkins, Aston Villa

You could maybe make a case for this not strictly counting, as Ollie Watkins was actually offside. But, we're going to allow it.

Duncan Ferguson's only match in temporary charge of the side this term came when Aston Villa made the visit to Goodison park. Unfortunately, he couldn't inspire the side to another rousing victory this time around, with Emiliano Beundia's header enough to give the visitors all three points.

However, it could have been more than the 1-0 scoreline in different circumstances. Watkins produced a header that looked almost certain to be going straight into the back of the net before Pickford instinctively stuck his foot out.

Despite his body moving the opposite direction to the flight of the ball, he made the stop, before the linesman eventually raised his flag for offside.

vs De Bruyne and Silva, Man City

This is technically two saves in one, but absolutely deserves a place on the list.

Everton were unlucky to be beaten 1-0 by Man City in the end. Phil Foden's winning goal came from the only real mistake the Everton defence made during a resolute display, and of course there's *that* VAR decision with Rodri's handball to be considered as well.

But the visitors almost made their advantage count earlier in the game. A slick move let to Kevin De Bruyne unleashing a powerful effort at goal which Pickford did well to get down to his left and stop.

He had to be on his feet quickly for the follow-up, though, with Bernardo Silva poised and looking to score. Instead he was met by the Everton goalkeeper who had made himself big to pull off another brilliant save.

vs Ronaldo, Manchester United

The game against Manchester United was crucial for Everton. Having just lost back-to-back away games following the international break, the momentum from the 99th minute win over Newcastle United had all but gone.

Instead, defeat to Burnley just days earlier meant the Blues went into the game with Manchester United knowing they were firmly in a relegation battle. Goodison Park erupted when Anthony Gordon put the hosts ahead and - unlike later wins in the survival bid - Everton were not forced to hang on in the second half.

Despite that, with just moments left, Ronaldo was gifted a golden opportunity to equalise. The ball fell to him inside the box and he unleashed a powerful half volley from 12 yards.

Pickford's positioning was perfect and he stuck out a strong arm to keep the ball out. To have conceded would have been a disaster for Everton but instead they claimed an important three points that boosted the club's reputation at home.

vs Azpilicueta, Chelsea

The save which was good enough to be nominated for a Premier League award, although there's a fair few on this list that could easily have claimed the accolade!

Leaving Goodison Park after what was a crucial and hard-fought win over Chelsea, if you'd spoken to any Evertonian they would no doubt have told you this was one of the best stops they had ever seen. Even those blessed with seeing Neville Southall knew it was something truly special.

After Mason Mount's effort cannoned off the inside of the post and found its way over to Cesar Azpilicueta on the other side of the box, those in the stands were just waiting for the net to bulge. There was no way that the England No. 1 could get up in time to make the save.

But he did. He shot to his feet and instantly sprinted across the face of his goal, curving his run slightly behind his line to react and make an absolutely stunning stop.

Seeing replays somehow make it even more unbelievable. What a save.

vs Harvey Barnes, Leicester City

There was so much to enjoy about the trip to Leicester City - the Finch Farm send-off, the glorious weather, Vitalii Mykolenko's stunning goal and Everton's first away win of 2022. There was a further collection of great saves from Pickford too, his flying one-handed stop from Nampalys Mendy among them.

Perhaps the best was his save from Harvey Barnes. Pickford was forced to get down low after seeing the shot late and claw the ball away from goal.

vs Jean-Phillipe Mateta, Crystal Palace

This was not Pickford's best save of the season, but it was one of his most important.

After Michael Keane had pulled Everton back into the penultimate match of the season, Palace created an opportunity to halt the Blues' momentum and restore their two goal lead. Mateta, who had opened the scoring, was played in down Everton's left but Pickford stood firm.

The rest is history.
