Jordan Henderson and Gary Lineker send messages to Raheem Sterling after 'harrowing ordeal'

Jordan Henderson has admitted it is a 'blow' to lose Raheem Sterling from the England squad but hopes to have his former Liverpool teammate back in Qatar shortly.

Sterling was not involved in the squad for Sunday evening's 3-0 win against Senegal, instead flying home to support his family after reports his house was broken into and raided by armed robbers. The Chelsea winger understandably wanted to fly back and be with his family in the aftermath.

Following last night's win, Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate said: "We will have to wait and see [if Sterling will be back to play against France], at the moment, clearly the priority is for him to be with his family and we're going to support that. We're going to allow him to have as much time as he needs."

Henderson scored the opening goal in the win at the Al Bayt Stadium, sweeping home Jude Bellingham's cutback before sharing an intense celebration with the Reds target. And speaking after the final whistle, the Liverpool captain sent his best wishes to Sterling.

"It is a blow but I hope everything is okay with Raheem's family at home and he can go back and sort everything out," Henderson told ITV. "Hopefully he can come back but I suppose he'll have to assess when he gets home. All our thoughts and support are with him."

BBC presenter and former Everton star Gary Lineker also sent thoughts to Sterling, posting on Twitter last night: "Thoughts are with @sterling7 and his family after their awful and harrowing ordeal".
