Jordan and Souness question Dan Ashworth's 'unsustainable' transfer claim amid Newcastle 'revolution'

Simon Jordan and Graeme Souness agree Newcastle United's owners will continue to spend 'big money' in order to secure success at St James' Park. The talkSPORT debate came on the back of sporting director Dan Ashworth's recent assertion that the Magpies' recent transfer spending was 'unsustainable'.

Newcastle have spent in excess of £200 million since the Saudi-led takeover was eventually confirmed in October last year. Eddie Howe's side currently occupy a top-six spot, and the squad has been bolstered by marquee arrivals such as Sven Botman, Bruno Guimaraes, Alexander Isak and Kieran Trippier.

However, Financial Fair Play will prevent Newcastle from copying the free-spending approaches introduced at Chelsea and Manchester City in the wake of their respective takeovers. Ashworth is convinced United have 'no ceiling' to their ambitions, but insists they will have to be 'creative' rather than maintaining their recent transfer investments.

Former Crystal Palace owner Jordan has previously questioned the FFP concerns currently surrounding Newcastle, insisting the club still had plenty of room for spending. Now, the talkSPORT presenter has addressed Ashworth's comments, and feels it is part of a strategy to combat United's new tag of the 'richest club in the world'.

Jordan told talkSPORT: "We were told they were going to spend £60 million in the last transfer window. They didn't, they spent much more. I suspect it's probably clever business to manage expectations and not allow everybody think you're going to walk into a room like Johnny Splattercash."

Former Newcastle boss Souness added: "As much as Dan Ashworth wants to play it down, if they get a hint of success, I'd expect them to spend big money."

Howe has previously stressed the need for 'evolution not revolution' in order to allow Newcastle to build and challenge the Premier League's elite in the long-term. This expression was put to Jordan by presenter Jim White, but the businessman is adamant the sweeping changes already made on and off the pitch prove the latter is already under way.

Jordan said: "I never believed that in the first place. Revolution is what they are on the cusp of because they have a completely different ownership model than they've had for the last 14 years.

"They've changed the entire backroom staff, the management staff, the buying and selling policy. That's not evolution, that's revolution.

"Newcastle have gone out and spent £220m in under a year. Don't be bleeding telling me that isn't revolution. That is a massive departure from what Newcastle have done going back to when Graeme was in situ.

"It is a complete and utter sea change. That is revolution. He's [Ashworth] managing expectation because everyone is sitting there, saying they're going to fire cannons of cash."
