Jonnie Irwin shares candid cancer battle update as he says he 'looks a right state'

A Place In The Sun presenter Jonnie Irwin attempted to shed some light on his ongoing cancer battle as he updated fans with a rather comical and relatable tale about travelling over the Easter weekend.

The 49-year-old is currently battling terminal cancer and made reference to his ongoing treatment as he shared a worn-out-looking selfie on his train journey earlier on Monday having nearly missed his connection.

The Channel 4 property host took to his Instagram to share the story with his 160k followers as people rushed to the comments to praise his "inspirational" journey during such a difficult time in his life.

He wrote: "Must’ve looked a right state - crazed and panicked Chemo boy dragging a wheeled case with a strange transparent shoulder bag falling down his arm and a hot crossed bun hanging from the side of his mouth attempting to run for the departing train.

"Thankfully the kind guardsman held the door at the far end. My penance was that my seat was at the opposite end so I had to walk past all the passengers who had viewed this spectacle."

One person took to his social media post and said: "You’re amazing ! If I had been a passenger I would have looked at you and thought what a guy . Such an inspiration."

Another added: "I would have given you a standing ovation, your inspirational no giving up in you Jonny Irwin," as they shared clapping and hearts to their message.

"To be fair, I’d call that a “power flex” not a “walk of shame," added another fan as someone else quipped: "Fair play to you! Sounds Herculean to me."

Someone else wrote: "There is no such thing as a walk of shame. You are an amazing guy going through a tougher time than any potential critic could even imagine.

"Please don't also take on the burden of considering what others might be thinking about you."

Jonnie, who lives in Hertfordshire with his wife Jessica and their three sons, Rex, three and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac, was first diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2020, which has since spread to his brain.

The Escape To The Country host shared the heartbreaking admission that he "doesn't know how long" he has left to live in November.

Since then he has been very open about his ongoing battle against the disease after saying plans to make as many memories as possible with his wife and three sons.

In February the property guru told fans he had begun Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy - which involves a hyperbaric chamber is a highly-pressurised room or tube where a patient is given pure oxygen to breathe.

It's thought flooding the body with concentrated oxygen can help make cancer cells easier to kill with treatments like chemotherapy and radiation while also activating the healing process in a patient's body.

Speaking about his diagnosis in March, he said he recalled how a recent kick-about with his young son almost 'broke' him, due to feeling 'weaker'.

Speaking with The Sun at the time, the doting dad explained how playing football with his son Rex left him feeling frustrated as he "couldn't get near the ball."

"I’m very sporty and suddenly it’s just like…it was as if it was the first time I’d attempted football. I felt like a granddad. And that broke me a bit," he said.
