Jonnie Irwin's 'heart breaks' at thought of wife remarrying amid terminal diagnosis

Jonnie Irwin has spoken of his despair at the thought of leaving his wife and young children behind.

The TV presenter, 48, recently shared the heartbreaking admission that he 'doesn't know how long' he has left to live, after first being diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2020, which has since spread to his brain.

Jonnie has now discussed the prospect of his wife Jessica Holmes going on to meet someone else in the future after his death - heartbreakingly admitting he wants his partner to be happy but the thought of her remarrying breaks his heart.

The A Place In The Sun presenter and Jessica, 40, tied the knot in September 2016 and have since gone on to welcome three children into the world together - Rex, three, and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac.

Earlier this month, Jonnie credited "Jess and our boys" with helping him stay positive and focus on creating as many memories as he can with his family following his terminal diagnosis.

Speaking in a new interview - in which he claims A Place In The Sun axed him when he revealed his terminal diagnosis - the TV star says he knows it's likely Jess will go on to meet someone else after he's passed away.

"In a selfless way I want her to find someone else eventually and have some support, but at the same time, I don’t. It breaks my heart," Jonnie poignantly explains to The Sun.

He adds: "Jess is not the sort to go on a dating app and in a perfect world I suppose she will meet a divorcé dad or someone who has lost their partner. But it’s not my business, I guess. That’s her life as much as it hurts me to think this way."

Jonnie and Jess met through mutual friends in 2016 and were married within a year after he popped the question in India.

Discussing his terminal diagnosis and death with Hello! magazine recently, Jonnie said: "I'm doing everything I can to hold that day off for as long as possible. I owe that to Jess and our boys. Some people in my position have bucket lists, but I just want us to do as much as we can as a family."

Over the years, the property expert has shared snippets of his and Jessica's blissful family life with their young children his 40,200 followers on Instagram.

"I love working on location but the downside is I miss some family moments," Jonnie captioned a snap of Jessica and two of their children dressed in Tottenham Hotspurs onesies last month.

"Got this through this morning with the extra pick me up of seeing the twins in their new onesies. Almost makes losing to them on Sunday palatable. #family #coys #twins #spursfamily."

Jonnie has spoken about the importance of life insurance following his terminal diagnosis (jonnieirwintv/instagram)

Jonnie was filming in Italy when he first realised something might be wrong with his health. In August 2020 he had an episode of blurry vision whilst he was driving - with subsequent tests confirming he had developed lung cancer, which had spread to his brain.

Alongside going public with his diagnosis earlier this month, Jonnie is also encouraging others to take out life insurance.

"That has helped so much and when I leave this planet," the star explained in a recent interview. I’ll do so knowing Jess and the boys are in a house that is fully paid off and there’s a bit of money in the bank for them to live off."
