Jonnie Irwin gives update on cancer battle as he heads for treatment in Newcastle

Jonnie Irwin has given a fresh update on his cancer battle, as he headed for treatment on Tyneside on Thursday.

Popular TV presenter Jonnie, star of A Place in the Sun, was met with a wealth of support and well wishes when he made his terminal cancer diagnosis public last year. He was given the devastating lung cancer prognosis back in August 2020, despite suffering no common signs or symptoms. The disease has since spread to his brain, with him now facing up to the heart-breaking realisation that he could have just months to live.

The 49-year-old now lives in Newcastle with his family and consistently praised the area and all it has to offer on his Instagram; from the friendly and helpful people, to the match day atmosphere at Kingston Park for Newcastle Falcons games, the stunning views at the coast and even the food at Jesmond's Dosa Kitchen, which he has recently become a big fan of.

And yesterday he was in the centre of town for treatment, as he uploaded a picture of himself ready to cross the High Level Bridge, which he captioned "And at the end of this walk..." which he then swiftly followed up with a photo of a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber.

The chamber is a highly-pressurized room or tube where a patient is given pure oxygen to breathe. It's thought flooding the body with concentrated oxygen can help make cancer cells easier to kill with treatments like chemotherapy and radiation, while also being beneficial to a patient's healing process.

The posts on Jonnie's Instagram story followed a humorous Valentine's post on his grid. Sharing a photo of a Magnum ice lolly, Jonnie wrote: "Last minute Valentines gift for my wife. Oh yes romance is blooming here in The Toon. Maybe a Greggs for breakfast in bed would’ve been better?!"
