In case anyone forgot, Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens reminded sports fans that power couples are people too during a recent appearance on Ryan Clark’s The Pivot podcast.
Owens’s guest spot turned into an episode of The Newlywed Game after the Packers safety recalled the story of how his relationship with the gymnastics legend, who was seated just off-screen, began. Owens first leveled the room by sharing that Biles actually pursued him on a dating app they matched on before shocking Clark and Co. with another bombshell—that he, somehow, didn’t who Biles was when they matched.
“I didn’t who she was at the time,” Owens said. “But the first thing that I saw was that she just had a bunch of followers so in my mind, I’m like, OK she got to be good. I promise you. Real life story.”
Naturally, Owens’s remark drew a look of disbelief from Clark, and likely every person within earshot. For what’s it worth, Owens explained that he was closed off to Biles’s 2016 Olympics successes because he was in training camp in college at the time.
The conversation took another funny turn when the attention shifted back to Owens’s claim that Biles was the more interested party at the start of their courtship, prompting the four-time gold medalist to set the record straight.
“We matched, I was just the first to message,” Biles said as Owens protested in the background. “I wasn’t scared. I know what I like and I know what I want.”
Regardless of how the lovebirds may remember their story, one thing’s for certain—the decision to move forward, obviously, worked out pretty well for the newlyweds in the end.
