The Twitter world was aflutter Sunday morning, immediately after word got out that the Orlando Magic had made former Dallas Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley their 15th head coach franchise history.
Magic fans and people across the NBA were excited about the news. And, it wasn’t just Twitter.
Magic standout Jonathan Isaac responded to a text from the Sentinel, writing, “I’m happy for him. He’s been faithful to the grind and the league for many years,” Isaac texted. “I’m excited to see all the knowledge he’s picked up around the greats and ready to keep moving forward as a team.”
Former Magic guard JJ Redick, who played for Mosley and the Mavericks at the end of this past season, reacted to a tweet about the news from Shams Charania of The Athletic by tweeting, “Love this!!”
Another Twitter reaction came from ESPN NBA front office insider Bobby Marks, who tweeted, “The Magic got it right.”
Mosley becomes the 11th Black head coach in the NBA, with still two positions left open in Washington and New Orleans, so that number could grow.
The hiring of Mosley led to an appreciative Twitter reaction from the Black Coaches Association, “Congrats to @OrlandoMagic new head coach, Jamahl Mosley. Thank you Orlando!”
Dallas All-Star Luka Doncic said earlier this past season — when Mosley was named interim head coach after Rick Carlisle contracted COVID-19 and missed several games — that he would support Mosley’s attempt to land a head coaching job.
After Mosley’s stint as interim coach, Doncic said, “He’s got the things that are needed for a head coach. He can be the head coach, for sure.”
Sunday he took to Twitter, tweeting a reaction to ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski’s post, “Congrats my guy.”
