If there is any question as to whether or not new Arizona Cardinals head coach is a fan of quarterback Kyler Murray or not, all it takes is one quote to know what he thinks.
“If Kyler Murray isn’t here, I don’t take this job,” he told NBC Sports’ Peter King.
He will have to go through the offseason with a rehabbing Murray, who is tore his ACL in early December and had surgery after the start of the new year.
But Gannon believes he can elevate the play of Murray once the quarterback is back on the field.
“This guy does things that it completely handcuffs you how you play defense – at times,” he said. “I think we can take him to another level and unleash his full skill set.”
Murray has played at an MVP level. He was there for a few games in 2020. He did for the first half of the 2021 season. Last season, things were off. His deep ball wasn’t hitting with his receivers. He dealt with injuries.
If Gannon is going to succeed at his new job, getting Murray back to that level and doing it more consistently is what he needs to do.
