Jonah Hill's weight loss transformation and how he shed 40lb after years of yo-yo dieting

Jonah Hill has undergone a complete transformation and lost a huge amount of weight in recent years.

The actor looks completely unrecognisable since his days starring in Superbad, having lost 40lb (2.9 stone) with the help of a nutritionist and personal trainer.

Jonah, 39, was recently spotted showing off his slimmed down physique and big bushy beard as he dropped off a surfboard at a shop to get it repaired at a shop in Malibu.

Fans were blown away by his change in appearance, with one person taking to Twitter to compare him to Tom Hanks in the film Castaway.

The Hollywood star has been very open about his body image struggles and how he fought hard to get in shape.

Here, we take a look at how Jonah managed to shed the pounds over the years.

Jonah Hill has battled with fluctuations in his weight throughout his career and has often found it difficult to maintain his goal weight.

At his heaviest, Jonah weighed almost 252lb (18 stone), but he managed to shed the weight and lost 40lb (2.9 stone).

Speaking about his transformation, he told ABC News that "it was mostly diet".

"I wish there was some crazy thing that I did, like a pill or a genie or something, but I went to see a nutritionist, and he told me what to eat to change my habits and stuff.

"I found that Japanese food was very helpful to me," Jonah explained.

He also admitted that something as simple as ditching beer had helped him shed the weight faster than he thought.

Jonah added: "It's so annoying because if I don’t drink beer, I get really really thin. Then when I drink beer, I get a little bigger."

Co-star advice

Despite his weight loss, Jonah ended up gaining the weight back.

However, he once again slimmed down in 2014 for the action-comedy film 22 Jump Street.

Jonah's diet and health living only lasted for two years and in 2016 Jonah again gained weight for his role in War Dogs opposite Channing Tatum.

Jonah admitted his co-star gave him a key piece of advice which helped him lose the weight he put on for his War Dogs role.

Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, he said: "I called Channing Tatum and said, 'Hey, if I ate less and go to a trainer, will I get in better shape?'

"And he said, 'Yes, you dumb motherf***er, of course you will. It's the simplest thing in the entire world'."

Self-esteem issues

Throughout the years, Jonah has been very open about his weight loss journey, admitting that his self-esteem had been affected by vicious criticism of his size.

Speaking to Ellen DeGeneres back in 2018, he said: "I became famous in my late teens and then spent most of my young adult life listening to people say that I was fat and gross and unattractive.

"And it's only in the last four years writing and directing my movie, Mid90s, that I’ve started to understand how much that hurt and got into my head."

He added: "I really believe everyone has a snapshot of themselves from a time when they were young that they're ashamed of.

"For me, it's that 14-year-old overweight and unattractive kid who felt ugly to the world, who listened to hip-hop and who wanted so badly to be accepted by this community of skaters."

Then in 2021, pictures of Jonah topless surfaced online, forcing him to speak out.

In an Instagram post, he said: "I don’t think I ever took my shirt off in a pool until I was in my mid 30s even in front of family and friends.

"Probably would have happened sooner if my childhood insecurities weren't exacerbated by years of public mockery about my body by press and interviewers.

"So the idea that the media tries to play me by stalking me while surfing and printing photos like this and it can’t phase me anymore is dope. I'm 37 and finally love and accept myself."
