Jon Stewart has been urged to run for President after hitting out at a pro-gun Republican in a debate about gun control and drag shows.
The comedian, 60, sat down with Nathan Dahm and slammed the Oklahoma State Senator for failing to protect children from firearms and instead focusing on banning drag show readings to children. A clip from the interview has resurfaced on social media following the heartbreaking school shooting in Nashville.
Earlier this month, Tennessee became the first US state to ban public drag shows, with the ruling set to take effect from July 1.
The law effectively prohibits drag queens from performing in front of children and comes after months of Republicans attacking Drag Queen Story Hour sessions.
Nathan, who supports such bans, appeared on a recent episode of The Problem with Jon Stewart where the host passionately highlighted the hypocrisy of the Senator's views.
Questioning Nathan's motives, Jon asked: "You want to ban drag show readings to children, why, what are you protecting? Are you infringing on that performer's free speech?"
Nathan replied: "They can continue to exercise their free speech, just not in front of a child."
Jon asked his quest why they shouldn't be allowed to perform in front of children, with Nathan saying the government has "a responsibility to protect children".
Jon picked up on this and asked: "What's the leading cause of death amongst children in this country? And I'm gonna give you a hint, it's not drag show readings to children."
"I'm presuming you're going to say it's firearms," his guest reluctantly replied.
Jon slammed Nathan's response and said: "No, I'm not gonna say it like it's an opinion. That's what it is.
"It's firearms, more than cancer, more than car accidents and what you're telling me is, you don't mind infringing on free speech to protect children from this amorphous thing that you think of, but when it comes to children that have died, you don't give a flying f**k to stop that because that shall not be infringed.
"That is hypocrisy at its highest order."
The interview has widely been shared online, with one fan tweeting: "Jon Stewart needs to run for President."
Another agreed: "Jon Stewart 2024!!!!" while a third fan wrote: "He is the absolute best at this. He’s knowledgeable and always prepared."
"I cannot begin to express how much I love this. John Stewart is amazing," another person said, while many others described Jon as "a national treasure".
