Jon Gruden Appeals Nevada Supreme Court Decision In NFL Lawsuit

Jon Gruden listens in court Wednesday, May 25, 2022, in Las Vegas, where a judge heard a bid by the National Football League to dismiss former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden's lawsuit, accu

Former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden is seeking a reconsideration from the Nevada Supreme Court regarding a lawsuit he filed against the NFL over leaked emails that led to his resignation in 2021. Gruden's attorneys filed documents after a three-justice panel's decision to dismiss the case and move it to arbitration overseen by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The panel's split 2-1 decision in May ruled in favor of the NFL's request to shift the case out of state court. A subsequent request for reconsideration was also denied by the same margin on July 1. The dissenting justice expressed concerns about Goodell arbitrating a case in which he is a defendant.

Gruden's lawsuit alleges that the NFL orchestrated his resignation by leaking emails containing offensive remarks he made about Goodell and others while working as an ESPN analyst. The leaked emails, which contained racist, sexist, and homophobic comments, were published by major media outlets, damaging Gruden's reputation and career.

The lawsuit, filed in 2022, claims that the selective disclosure of the emails caused Gruden to lose his coaching position and endorsement deals. Gruden, who coached in the NFL for nearly two decades and won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003, returned to the Raiders in 2018 before resigning in 2021.

The legal battle between Gruden and the NFL continues as the former coach seeks monetary damages for the alleged interference and conspiracy that led to his departure from the Raiders. The NFL has not commented on the recent court filings, and both parties have remained silent on the matter.
